WASHINGTON — Senator Mike Braun, member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), issued the following statement regarding the Texas federal court ruling on the Biden administration’s surprise medical billing regulation this week.

Senator Braun has made controlling costs for health care a top legislative priority in the Senate, and co-sponsored the Stop Surprise Medical Bills Act.

“As a Senator deeply concerned about health care costs, I believe that this week’s Texas federal court ruling is a step in the right direction to protect patients. The Biden administration’s interim final rule, issued to implement certain provisions of the No Surprises Act, failed to create a fair mediation (or independent dispute resolution) process to resolve surprise medical bill disputes over costs and coverage. The administration’s rule failed to include key factors, as determined by Congress, in this mediation process. This court ruling promotes a more balanced mediation process between providers and insurers as the No Surprises Act intended, to protect Americans’ access to health care, especially in rural states like my home state of Indiana.”Senator Mike Braun
