WASHINGTON — It has come as a surprise to many in Washington that President Joe Biden has picked California attorney general Xavier Becerra to run the Department of Health and Human Services as part of his administration.
Becerra is a former congressman from California and has been serving as attorney general in that state since 2017, succeeding Vice-President Kamala Harris in that job after she won a Senate seat from California.
Indiana Sen. Mike Braun told Fox Business this week that Becerra is the wrong pick for the job, which was previously filled by Alex Azar, a former executive at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis.
“I think he’s going to be the perfect wingman to the Bernie Sanders approach to healthcare,” Braun said. “My main reservation is … why would you not want to reform the healthcare system before you get government more involved with it.”
Braun fears that Becerra will embrace an HHS Department that will push for greater government input over America’s healthcare system. During his time in Congress as a Democrat, Becerra was a huge proponent of the Affordable Care Act. He has no medical training or experience in running a public health organization.
“I’d really like to see him embrace reform measures before you embrace the Bernie Sanders approach to having even more government involved in a broken system,” Braun said.
Braun partially blames conservatives for the greater push for more government being involved in healthcare since Republicans haven’t been able to put forth a viable alternative to Obamacare.
