Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN) is asking Hoosier farmers to be patient as the United States continues to be entangled in a trade conflict with China.
Farmers have seen commodity prices tumble as a result of retaliatory tariffs the Chinese placed on a number US products including soybeans. The low market prices paired with an unseasonably wet number of days this spring is causing some farmers to worry about the future of their operations.
Braun met with farmers in Evansville Friday, and was candid about how he saw the talks progressing. He doesn’t foresee an agreement between the two nations anytime soon.
“I think it’s going to be longer rather than shorter,” he says. “I just try to say things honestly, and hoping that there is some breakthrough I just don’t sense that’s going to happen.”
Braun says plans to support additional payments to farmers to help them in the meantime.
He also stressed the importance of finalizing a revised trade agreement between Mexico, Canada, and the United States. That bill is currently held up in the House.
