WASHINGTON D.C. (WEHT) – US Senator Mike Braun (R-Ind.) and a Democratic Senator from Massachusetts are introducing two bills to help combat the opioid crisis.
Both bills aim to provide clear warnings to patients regarding the risk of opioid drugs.
The first bill, The Label Act, would require prescription opioid bottles to be labeled with a consistent, clear, and concise warning that opioids may cause dependence, addiction, or overdose.
The second bill would require all prescribers to complete mandatory federal education training when applying for a federal license in order to prescribe controlled substances.
TARIFFS
In connection with the issue of tariffs, Sen. Braun called tariffs “salt to the wound” for farmers.
Sen. Braun drew a distinction between tariffs surrounding Canada & Mexico and those surrounding China.
If the Chinese hit back again with tariffs, Sen. Braun said he’d hope the country would come to help farmers if things are still at an impasse.
SMOKING AGE
Sen. Braun said he thinks tobacco adds cost to health care and the issue deserves consideration.
He said he’s leaning towards supporting a proposal backed by Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.) which would raise the smoking age from 18 to 21, but he said he’s not there in terms of a final decision.
He mentioned some concern over being able to have other rights at the age of 18.
